In every concrete paver project we install a minimum of 2"s of ABC material (ABC is a mix of sand, dirt and multi sized gravel) for base, This ensures us that the risk of paver failure is greatly decreased. After we compact the base we install a 1" thick bed of sand for the pavers to lay on. There are so many different types of soil around the world and the Phoenix area is mostly made up of Clay soil. Clay is a cohesive soil and is not a good base for pavers since it expends and contracts when wet causing pavers to sink and move. The use of base material reduces this greatly. We believe that returning to a job site for a repair is not only a waste of time and money but also makes us look bad as a company. By this we make sure to properly install the project the right way the first time.
In driveway situations we a minimum of 4" of ABC and an 80mil paver. This will insure that the rotational, horizontal and vertical pressures do not cause the pavers to rut or sink, The thicker paver we use in these situations also have a slighter chance of becoming damaged due to heavy machinery and traffic.
We also offer a polymeric sand, this sand has polymers in it which act as glue to reduce the chance of weeds, ants and also the sand washing away. It is highly recommended around pools and in areas of high water flow. Sealing your pavers is also a recommendation. Techni seal is the leader is concrete paver sealers and they ONLY manufacture sealers made for concrete pavers. There are many different types of sealers, some types make the pavers look wet all of the time and others just make them easy to clean off and keep there color lasting for many many many years. Ask the sales associate if a sealer is recommended for your job situation.
